Bishop's 2011 Lenten Message

http://www.cruzblanca.org/hermanoleon/color/hl/si6va11.jpgMy Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We are closing in on Lent, and I have been thinking about it in light of our sled-dog races.

I know it sounds odd to compare Lent with mushing, but let me explain what I mean.  When I hear about the dog-teams and drivers that face brutal cold, open water and howling winds, I am amazed at the strength and determination of these athletes.

Yet, I think Lent can be even more difficult. However, the challenges lie within.

Don't we set out on our forty-day journey knowing we will meet with temptations for worldly wealth, power and prestige? Won't we struggle to tame our tendency toward selfishness?   Don't we often run up against the broad expanse that divides our hearts from those in need?

I believe so.  So let me echo St. Paul and call on each of us to run the good race.  This Lent reach out to those in need, sacrifice a little something each day and dig deep into scripture and prayer for understanding.  In this way, we may joyfully cross the finish line into the glorious triumph of Easter.

God bless you.
