Nunam Iqua - Saint Peter Catholic Church
Nunam Iqua, meaning land's end, is a Central Yup'ik Eskimo village located at the mouth of the south fork of the Yukon River, nine miles south of Alakanuk. For many years this village was known as Sheldon Point, but in September of 1999, the people there voted to restore the name of Nunam Iqua.
There is no mention of a settlement at that site prior to the 1950's. Around that time, the people from Black River region moved to the area. In the 1950's a church was built out of salvaged lumber from the dismantled Akulurak mission. In 1971, Fr. Richard McCaffrey, S.J., with the help of Jesuit Brothers John Huck and Melius, built a new priest quarters. The church was originally dedicated to Saint Mary. In 1983 it was re-dedicated to Saint Peter.
The Nunam Iqua Catholic community has been served from Alakanuk by the following priests of the Society of Jesus: Frs. Segundo Llorente, William McIntyre, Francis Nawn, Thomas Hatrel, René Astruc, Thomas Gallagher, Henry Hargreaves and Thomas Provinsal.
