(Mohawk pronunciation: Gah-deh-lee Deh-gah-quee-tah )
Kateri Tekakwitha Circles were formed by Catholic Native leadership in the ?'s to promote the cause of Sainthood for Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, who will be the first proclaimed Native American (indigenous) Saint, God willing. A prayer is said to further the cause of her canonization at every meeting. Blessed Kateri, of Mohawk and Algonquin heritage, converted to Catholicism as a very young girl. She is known as "Lily of the Mohawks" and is revered by all indigenous peoples.
Blessed Kateri is the Patroness of Ecology and Environment. Her Feast Day is July 14th in the United States and April 17th in Canada.
The Fairbanks Circle was formed in 2005, to address the Catholic cultural needs, i.e., culturally sensitive, united prayer together, of Alaskan and other Native peoples in the Catholic Diocese of Fairbanks.
The Kateri Tekakwitha Circle meets for Mass at 4:00 PM, on the third Sunday of every month at Immaculate Conception Church in Fairbanks, followed by a potlatch.
We have formed an Advisory Board. This board consists of a five members of the Kateri Circle who serve as advisors to the Director. These officers will have monthly meetings with the Urban Native Ministry Director, to address relevant issues, always praying for the Holy Spirit's guidance. Prayer and / or Talking Circle sessions are intended to occur monthly when possible. These sessions will be guided by the Director and members will be encouraged to attend whenever possible.
Fund raisers will be held two or three times a year in order that one or more members of the Circle might attend the National Tekakwitha Conference, wherever these are held (in, or outside of the United States).
Our goal is to reach out to those in greatest need.
Let Us Pray
O God, who, among the many marvels of Your Grace in the New World,
did cause to blossom on the banks of the Mohawk
and of the St. Lawrence, the pure and tender Lily,
grant we beseech You, the favor we beg through her intercession,
that this Young Lover of Jesus and of His Cross
may soon be counted among the Saints of Holy Mother Church,
and that our hearts may be enkindled with a stronger desire
to imitate her innocence and faith.
Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, pray for us.
