Catholic Bishop of Northern Alaska
All employees of the diocese, including bishops, clergy, and religious are required to complete annual safe environment training and undergo Criminal History Record checks. The background checks are renewed every five years or as requested after an extended absence from ministry.
Any volunteer who works with children, youth or other vulnerable popluations are required to complete a course on Serving Vulnerable Populations once every five years. A Criminal History Record Check is required and renewed every five years by volunteers working in ministry with children, youth, or vulnerable adults.
Criminal History checks and a letter of suitability are required of international and temporarily assigned priests who minister in the diocese.
Youth Ministers under the age of eighteen who work with vulnerable populations do not need a criminal background check run. However, if over the age of 14, training must be provided by the parish or school on the recognition of abuse and expectations of reporting if abuse is suspected. If a minor under the age of 14 plans to minister to children or vulnerable adults, the parent or guardian must be present and is responsible for the youth unless the minor is under the direction of school faculty for school related activities.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING - BEGIN HERE
*The Safe Environment website should lead you through the background check process. If you are renewing or resubmitting a background check, please use the same button above.
The Safe Environment Office receives the results of the background checks run for the diocese. If a report comes back of an individual with criminal activity, an Adverse Letter will be sent to the individual notifying them of what was found and the actions to take if a mistaken idenity or error was made.
An individual with confirmed criminal activity will not be allowed in ministry involving children, youth, or vulnerable adults if the report reflects any sort of abusive or violent convictions.
The Catholic Diocese of Fairbanks uses age-appropriate audiovisual programs and live presentations in its Safe Environment Training.
Child Protection and Abuse Prevention: Among the programs used are "You Are in Charge of Your Body", selections of Virtus and Praesidium programs, Second Step and videos from the Protect Yourself Rules video series.
Serving Vulnerable Populations: Webinar concerning child abuse, boundaries, and vulnerable adults. Available at fairbanks.safeenvironment.org.
